THE SCHOOLS OF THE "NEW STATE"

Plan of the centenaries - It was launched by the new state in 1940, aimed at installing primary schools necessary for literacy of the Portuguese people.

The construction of large-scale schools took place until the mid-1960s.

With their typical architecture, they have just become a brand image of Portugal, existing in almost all the country's settlements.

Basic typologies were established, which would be adapted to the local conditions, mainly in terms of the materials used in its construction.

Many of these schools were shut down in the 1990s, some have been turned into museums, restaurants, hotel establishments, etc.
